Preschool children are naturally good at giving. Well, they’re naturally good at giving when they have a little help. Parents can help their children by showing how to give. In other words, to give the gift of giving, give a child an example.
One way a preschooler learns to be generous is by watching how a parent behaves and responds to the needs of others. When your preschooler observes your generous behavior, help him understand why you are being generous. If possible, find a way for your child to participate.
Here are a few additional tips to help teach your preschooler about giving:
Give away two toys with each purchase of a new toy. When you go to the store to buy a gift for your child, have your child choose 2 of her old toys she’s outgrown to give away. Establish this tradition early on in your child’s life, and she will appreciate the act of giving.
Adopt a family in need. So many people around us are less fortunate. This season is a great time to reach out to families in need. Work with a local non-profit or with a homeless shelter, and take your child with you. He will never forget the wonderful experience of helping others.
Encourage your child to practice saying thank you. Gratitude is one of the most important things a person can learn. Starting your child on the right foot by saying these 2 simple words—“thank you”—can go a long way.
Have a family dinner and allow each family member to express 3 reasons why they are grateful. Help your child understand that the feeling of gratitude comes from the heart, and when someone expresses a grateful thought, it’s because of the love they share with that person.
Gratitude and generosity are the ebb and flow of a healthy life—gratitude for receiving gifts and generosity for giving them. This is the river from which life flows, and with your help, a lifetime of joy and happiness begins.
