Life can get busier in the blink of an eye when you have a toddler, preschooler, or school-aged child at home. Between pickup and drop-off at a childcare or daycare and all of the extracurricular activities that happen in the evenings and on the weekends, your calendar fills up quickly! Every parent desires their family to have quality time together and also have their children explore new interests as they grow and develop new skills. How can you strike a balance between family time and other activities? Below are a few tips on helping busy parents find a schedule that works for their family.
Before you say “Yes,” consider your family goals and make sure this activity would not hinder them. For some, one night a week is sufficient for family time while other families may want to carve out more time to be together. Know your priorities and make decisions based on your family’s goals instead of other external factors.
Ask a lot of questions about the activity. Adding another commitment to your calendar means you need to know exactly what is involved and how much time needs to be dedicated to that new commitment. Even activities that happen only once a month can absorb a lot of your time and attention.
Consolidate your schedule. Look at your schedule and see if there are any opportunities available that would help you spend your time more effectively.
Discuss the schedule with your family. Pay attention to the commitment level and keep in mind that certain times of the year tend to be busier than others. Is the schedule creating too much stress? Is your child having fun, learning, and growing through each activity?
Does the activity enhance or distract from your child’s learning? For some children, participating in extracurricular activities helps them put the knowledge they’re using in preschool to work and it helps develop social skills. For other children, too many activities create a distraction from their learning abilities and their academic performance can suffer as a result.
All in all, the fall is a great time to restart your scheduling priorities before the craziness of the holidays begins. Think of it like a “fall” spring-cleaning!
